What this interview actually measures.
The IO grade serves Hong Kong's immigration function — passport control, enforcement, removals, and complex casework involving asylum claims and trafficking. The interview tests legal awareness, ethical reasoning, and the ability to make defensible discretionary decisions. IRB's preparation puts you in the casework, not the textbook.

What candidates ask about Immigration Officer.
What is an Immigration Officer?
The IO grade runs Hong Kong's immigration function: passport control, enforcement, removals, and casework involving asylum and trafficking. It is a disciplined service.
How do I become an Immigration Officer?
Hold a degree, pass the CRE at Level 2, pass the BLNST, clear a physical fitness test, then a preliminary interview, a written exam, and a final interview. Apply through the Immigration Department.
Is there a physical fitness test for Immigration Officer?
Yes. Five items, each scored 0 to 5, with a minimum points total. It is a separate gate from the written rounds.
What does the Immigration Officer interview test?
Integrity, professionalism, judgement at the border, bilingual communication, and love for Hong Kong. The preliminary round is a syndicate discussion in English.
What is the Immigration Officer recruitment cycle?
Apply July. Physical test September to October. Preliminary interview November to December. Written January. Final interview February to April.
Does the Immigration Officer grade require the JRE?
No. The IO grade uses its own written examination, not the JRE. The CRE and BLNST are the standing requirements.
Is the Immigration Officer a disciplined service?
Yes. Uniformed, with a physical fitness standard and integrity checks beyond the standard vetting.
What casework does an Immigration Officer handle?
Asylum claims, trafficking cases, removals, and enforcement. The work demands legal awareness and defensible discretionary decisions at the counter and the gate.

Disciplined-grade selection. Legal awareness, discretion, and defensible judgment are tested in every casework scenario — the work at the counter is real, and the interview reflects it.
What we drill, and why.
Notes from Mike Yeung — former Senior Administrative Officer, twelve years across seven bureaux.
Discretion is the core of the job and the core of the interview. Every casework question is a judgment call.
The panel watches whether you reach for the statute before you reach for an opinion.
I served in this grade before the AO. The pressure at the counter is real — the interview tests whether you can hold it.
Asylum, trafficking, and removal casework: know the statutory frame before you answer.
The recruitment calendar — and where your preparation sits against it.
Twelve months, two tracks. Above, the official Immigration Officer milestones — applications, written papers, interviews. Below, the Companion preparation schedule: policy fluency from March, deepening through the autumn, government fundamentals in summer, the interview crusher in December, mock panels in the January–February crunch.
The IO cycle straddles two calendar years: apply Jul (Year N) → physical test Sep–Oct → preliminary Nov–Dec → written Jan → final interview Feb–Apr (Year N+1). See immd.gov.hk.
What the IO panel is really reading for.
Five character and work calibres the Immigration Officer panel weighs — drawn from the department’s own published values and the Civil Service Bureau’s competency framework.
Apply the law without fear or favour.
Hold the standard at the counter and the gate.
Decide at the border, fast and fair.
