The Reality

What this assessment actually is.

The Basic Law and National Security Law Test (Degree / Professional Grade) sits beside the CRE. It is a thirty-minute bilingual paper — English and Chinese — of twenty multiple-choice questions. Ten correct answers pass. The test is now digitalised: it runs Monday to Friday, six timeslots a day, and candidates may book a sitting year-round once applications are accepted. A pass is required for appointment to every degree-grade post in the civil service.

Preparation notes

What candidates overlook.

  • Small paper, standing requirement — book it early in the cycle and clear it off the list.
  • Pair revision with current-affairs reading; the doctrine sits inside the policy reasoning the panel will test later.
  • The digitalised format means you choose the day. Do not leave it to the week before your interview.
